  • May 2022 - Bone Health

It is estimated that worldwide 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 suffer from the boneweakening disease known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis occurs when there is an imbalance between bone reabsorption (bonebreakdown) and bone formation. Bone is a living tissue that undergoes constant transformation. At any given moment, there are between 1-10 million sites where small segments of old bone are being broken down (reabsorbed) and new bone is being laid down to replace it. When more bone is being destroyed than new bone is being laid down, bone loss occurs.

Prescription drug therapy may be appropriate for those individuals with advanced bone loss. But before starting potentially dangerous drug therapy, patients need to be educated on the role proper nutrition plays in ensuring optimal bone health. There are at least 18 key bone-building nutrients essential for bone health. These include vitamins D, E, C, B-12, K, folic acid, and minerals including boron, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc. By knowing the key nutrients for proper bone health, the majority of osteoporosis cases may be prevented. Good bone health is also dependent upon regular weight-bearing exercise, along with healthy habits such as not smoking, moderate alcohol and caffeine consumption, and minimal sugar consumption, especially sugared soft drinks.

  • April 2022 - Allergy and Hayfever

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic in!ammatory condition of the nasal passages that affects a large portion of Americans. For some individuals, allergies are a seasonal manifestation. For others, allergies area year-round challenge.

The term “hay fever” originated in the early 1800s when individuals seemed to suffer allergy symptoms during the hay growing season. The symptoms commonly seen with hay fever and seasonal allergies are watery, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, excessive mucous production, and sneezing. Histamine, which is produced by the mast cells, creates a cascade of events that are meant to flush out the offending substance from the body. That is why antihistamines are commonly used to address the symptoms of histamine release. However, antihistamines come with a number of adverse side effects. Fortunately, there are several natural substances that may help to manage allergy challenges without the side effects found in traditional antihistamine products.

  • March 2022 - Anti-Aging

One of the most popular areas of medicine today is anti-aging medicine, or as it is often referred to, functional medicine. Anti-aging/functional medicine attempts to keep individuals healthy and functioning regardless of their age. Most of us want to live as long as we possibly can. However, do we want to add years to our life, or life to our years?

So how do we assess how well we are aging? Many researchers are looking at the length of our telomeres, the strands at the end of chromosomes, to correlate our chronological age with our biological age. Others are looking at our genetics and the role our genes play in our aging. Still others are looking at how well our bodies function metabolically, in such areas as methylation. In fact, methylation capability is becoming one of the most recognized approaches to measuring overall health. From the brain to the cardiovascular system, from detoxification capabilities to energy production, the accessibility of methyl donor groups is essential to health and preventing premature aging.

  • February 2022 - Wound Healing

Effective wound healing is best achieved in a person who is well-nourished. The healing process is an intense cellular process that requires energy, nutrients and good vascular flow. Inadequacy in any of these areas will slow down the healing process. Protein intake is absolutely essential for wound healing. To rebuild damaged tissue, the body requires the amino acids found in protein.

There are other additional nutritional agents which can help to facilitate wound healing. Vitamin C has been shown to encourage collagen formation and effective wound healing. Vitamin A and zinc also help support the cross-linking of collagen for effective wound healing. And the plant enzyme bromelain helps to speed wound healing by digesting damaged tissue and reducing pain.
